It was nice to be atop McAfee Knob near Roanoke, Virginia again! This had been a long day of hiking and I arrive just before sunset.

In April I began my second AT thru-hike attempt leaving Springer Mountain in Georgia on an unseasonably warm spring day. This was the first time that I have ever repeated a long distance trip and as you’ll see in the following journal, I learned a lot of new things about myself by doing so.

Unfortunately, my dream for a second thru-hike came to an abrupt halt after 52 days on the trail and about 1,400 miles. I had to pull off the trail at Bear Mountain in New York after experiencing the symptoms of the West Nile Virus… lack of energy, aching, lack of appetite, and a very bad inflammation centered in my head/brain area. I’ve made a full recovery however that last 700 miles to Katahdin will hang over my head until I finish them!

Lastly, I have given the theme of “Up Close and Personal” to my walk on the AT this year, as you will see in the journal photos to follow. Although I averaged 26 miles per day on this walk I still took plenty of time to get in touch with the trail, really up close with the macro lens on my Nikon Coolpix 775 although I had to greatly compress the pictures for quicker download time. Who says that ultralight backpackers don’t have time to stop and “smell the roses” ?!? Enjoy the journey!

.

If you'd like more information on the trail including a thorough bookstore with everything you need, from a day hike to a multi-month thru-hike, then go here to visit the Appalachian Trail Conference.

The plaque atop Springer Mountain, just the way that I found it.
