Appalachian Trail... photos and journal

Spring of 2002... Not the south...

(Page 2 of 2 pages)

.
This sort of looks like one of those crop eating bugs.

And good morning to you too!

From my journal (June 6th) Day-51..."I always marked my data book as to my location and time during each day and my last marking was at 3:45 p.m. when I crossed New York highway 17-A and guess that I must have camped near Cat Rocks. I do recall how it rained so hard during the night non-stop, and then waking up the next morning with a pain in my head that had become almost a throbbing fire-like pain that wouldn’t go away and I knew for sure that something very bad was going on in my body. I had absolutely no spirit to be on the trail and walked into a small motel near Bear Mountain, New York when I thought once again that my condition was getting better. "

Into New York state

.
Although the trail had skimmed and touched New York before, this was the final passage point into New York.

Beautiful lake country overlooking the state line!

From my journal (June 7th) Day-52..." From here I was finally convinced that I needed help so I got myself into New York City only 30 miles away by train and the rest is history. At some future date I’d like to finish hiking the 700 remaining miles of the Appalachian Trail, but it won’t be a thru-hike this time! If the hike had to end then I’m glad it happened where it did because I’d like to do a flip-flop next time, perhaps not during the peak tick and mosquito season this round, from Kathadin back to NYC which will be a great way and place to conclude yet another adventure… and BOY has this been an adventure!!! "

.
And finally it's the great suspension bridge over the Hudson River. The AT crosses over the bridge but this is the point where I had to depart the trail and caught a train into New York City about 30 miles away and began to deal with my illness.

Thanks for letting me share a moment on the trail with you!
